What Does Reconditioning a Cylinder Head Mean?

Category: Cylinder Head Reconditioning Reading Time: 4 min By: All Head Services
Cylinder head reconditioning is a critical process for restoring a vehicle's engine performance — but what exactly does it involve, and when should mechanics consider it? With 45 years of specialist experience, All Head Services breaks it down.

The Reconditioning Process

Reconditioning a cylinder head means restoring it to near-new condition through a series of specialised steps. At AHS, every head goes through our full reconditioning workflow before it leaves our Keysborough facility.

🧹

Cleaning

Removing carbon deposits, oil and grime using a combination of spin wash, pressure washing and ultrasonic cleaning to ensure all contaminants are fully removed before inspection begins.

🔬

Inspection

Checking for cracks, warpage and valve seat damage using pressure testing and the latest hardness testing technology to confirm the cylinder head is structurally sound.

⚙️

Machining

Resurfacing the head to ensure a perfectly flat mating surface using precision surfacing machines and mills — critical for a proper head gasket seal.

🔧

Valve Work

Replacing or regrinding valves, seats and guides to restore proper sealing and airflow — one of the most common causes of compression loss.

Assembly

Installing new seals, springs and components to meet or exceed OEM specifications before the head is pressure tested and cleared for dispatch.

This process is particularly common for high-stress workhorse vehicles like Ford Rangers and Toyota HiLuxes, where cylinder heads endure extreme temperatures and heavy use over hundreds of thousands of kilometres.

Why It Matters

A properly reconditioned cylinder head restores engine compression, improves fuel efficiency, and recovers lost power — saving mechanics and their clients from costly full engine replacements. It's especially important for:

  • Performance builds — where precision machining can unlock additional power
  • Vintage restorations — where new OEM parts are scarce or unavailable
  • Fleet vehicles — where minimising downtime and cost per vehicle is critical
  • High-mileage daily drivers — where reconditioning extends engine life significantly

When to Recondition

Mechanics should consider cylinder head reconditioning when a vehicle presents with any of the following:

  • Warping from overheating — especially after coolant loss or thermostat failure
  • Leaking valves causing poor compression, misfires or power loss
  • Cracks or corrosion from age, heavy use or overheating events
  • Blown head gasket with coolant mixing into oil or vice versa
  • High mileage — vehicles over 200,000km often benefit from a full recondition
AHS Tip: Don't wait for full engine failure. A cylinder head showing early signs of warping or valve wear is far cheaper to recondition than an engine that has been run with a compromised head for thousands of kilometres. Catching it early is always the better outcome for your client.
